Complete Novels: The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter/Reflections in a Golden Eye/the Ballad of the Sad Cafe/the Member of the Wedding/Clock Without Hands (Library of America)

Authors: Carson McCullers and Carlos L. Dews

Magnificent McCullers
Carson McCullers, one of America's greatest Southern writers, was often misunderstood, as many people were put off and/or unwilling to deal with her (at the time) controversial subject matter. MCCullers used the grotesque as exaggerated symbols of everyday experience. The loneliness and isolation of her gothic-like characters were merely extreme examples of feelings we all have, though magnified and intensified to the nth degree.

Tennessee Williams, in his introduction to MCCullers' "Reflections in a Golden Eye", posed the question (in a mock dialogue) most people asked about writers of the 'gothic' school such as Carson McCullers, Flannery O'Connor, Katherine Anne Porter and Eudora Welty: "Why do they write about such dreadful things?" Williams replies, " In my opinion it is most simply definable as a sense, an intuition of an underlying dreadfulness in modern society.. Why have they got to use..symbols of the grotesque and the violent? Because a book is short and a man's life is long... The awfulness has to be compressed."

McCullers, unlike any writer I have ever read, pierces the heart of themes such as love, isolation, and loneliness with her lucid, poetic prose. Tennessee Williams, in Virginia Spencer Carr's biography of McCullers summed up McCullers' writing as follows: "I have used the word 'heart', but it is not an adequate word to describe the core of Carson McCullers' genius....I believe, in fact I know, that there are many, many with heart who lack the need or gift to express it. And therefore Carson McCullers is what I would call a necessary writer: She owned the heart and the deep understanding of it, but in addition she had that 'tongue of angels' that gave her power to sing of it, to make of it an anthem."

The unique lady of the "South"
Until very recently, it was quite difficult to find a nice hardback copy of Mc Culler's novels. Each one of them is absolutely priceless and unforgettable; believe me when I tell you that "The Ballad of the Sad Café" is one of those stories that long remain on your mind. Mc Culler's novels, clearly influenced by Faulkner, surpass the master himself in magnetism, , power of storytelling and above all, characterization. If you add to all this a dose of gothic dark strangely ambivalent sense of humour, the result is certainly a writer utterly impossible to classify, novels that you really enjoy reading and characters that you are very unlikely to forget. Besides I am fully in love with the Library of America hardback editions and Mc Cullers certainly deserves to be included in this collection.
Later, if you want to give yourself a treat, go and buy her autobiography, although unfinished, a memorable book.

Complete Sinawali: Filipino Double Weapon Fighting (Complete Series)
Published in Paperback by Charles E Tuttle Co (November, 2000)
Author: Reynaldo S. Galang
Average review score:

Complete Sinawali
Complete Sinawali by Rey Galang describes about two dozen "Sinawali" or double stick drills as done by the Bakbakban group in New Jersey. The sinawali patterns described here are not the usual symmetrical patterns that most beginners are used to, and careful attention should be paid to the footwork, which allows the practitioner to perform the strikes with the proper distancing, timing, speed, and power to make them effective.

Bakbakban offers a videotape series that features some of their double stick patterns and there is usually a seminar once a year based on these as well. I would recommend attending a seminar after I had purchased the book and video in order to fine-tune the body-mechanics that are presented therein. All in all, an excellent book that belongs on the shelf of any Filipino martial artist.

Wow
This book is very informative. It gives a good understanding of what stick fighting is and how to train in it. With its simple steps it takes you from a drill to its applications. I highly recomend this book to anyone wanting to learn FMA on their own.

Count on Math: Activities for Small Hands and Lively Minds

Authors: Pamela Schiller, Lynne Peterson, Cheryl Kirk Noll, and Pam Schiller

Great book for teaching math concepts to young minds!
I teach Child Development at the College level. I was sent this book to review. I highly recommend it for parents of children 3-8, classroom teachers, homeschoolers and preschool teachers. Most people believe you should begin teaching math by teaching numbers and counting. Math is very conceptual. Before numbers are taught, children need to understand some relationships in time and space. This book is full of activites/experiments that do just that. An excellent way to begin building conceptual skills in young children (preschool) and a super way to teach and reinforce concepts in young elementary children. Parents also gain an understanding of certain terms such as numeration, seriation, etc. An excellent resource!

Count on Math: Activities for Small Hands and Lively Minds
Awesome! This book has been easy for me, a homeschooler, to use with both my 3-year old and 5-year old. Though they each are learning at different levels they are having fun and staying entertained. Materials used are easy to find around the house. Includes methods to evaluate progress, book and song lists for each learning unit and, for classroom teachers, a page to send home to parents so they can reinforce the learning going on in the classroom. It's been so great it's time to stop borrowing and buy my own. Highly recommend.

Creepy Crawlies and the Scientific Method: More Than 100 Hands-On Science Experiments for Children
Published in Paperback by Fulcrum Pub (June, 1993)
Author: Sally Stenhouse Kneidel
Average review score:

This is a MUST-HAVE for teachers!!
This book offers detailed information about different critters that are "common" to a classroom in an interesting and "easy to read" way. It provides terrific experiements to conduct, and values following the chid's lead and interests- creating experiments from their questions! WONDERFUL!

I highly recommend this book to k-12 science teachers!
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in science experiments and the scientific method. It is appropriate for any child grades k-12, with minor adaptations. The writing is clear, concise and accurate. Most of the experiments involve insects. Materials are inexpensive and easy to obtain. The book contains lists of suppliers and references. Data charts and tables are included and need only be copied by a teacher.

The Crimes of Patriots: A True Tale of Dope, Dirty Money, and the CIA

YOU BE THE JUDGE
On the advice of a friend who knows one of the "Cast Of Characters" (a "Yank In The Bank"), I ordered a used copy of this long out of print book. What an eye opener. It's amazing what a group of "former" senior military officers and spooks can get up to when allowed to run amok overseas. You name it and they got away with it. Even though some of the principals are dead, nobody has been held accountable for the myriad of crimes that have occurred abroad. With the lack of support rendered by the U.S. government (especially the F.B.I.), it makes one wonder how "former" some of the players really were. It's amazing how many of these same people reared their ugly heads years later during "Iran-Contra". Read the book and then decide for yourself.

How the U.S. brought down Australia's government in 1975
As an Australian I was both surprised and gratified that an American journalist should want to trace the extraordinary history of the Nugan Hand Bank's Australian operations. This great document decribes the most cut-throat, heroin dealing, crime syndicate ever to have sullied our shores, and all under the covert auspices of the C.I.A. Kwitny's research is exhaustive and his even handed way of presenting his findings is exemplary of fine journalism. The implications hatched in this veritable can of worms will have net-sleuths busy for years tracing the myriad references to the numerous associates of Nugan Hand who vanished into the night only to surface again in the Irangate scandal. Essential reading for anyone trying to come to terms with the scourge of heroin, the world arms trade and those members of the U.S.'s covert agencies that spread misery in their own and other countries...Read it if you dare!

The book that had supense!
I loved this book so much because it never let you dry for suspense. I was always wanting to read more and more. I couldn't stop. This book had a fantastic main charcters that seemed like I could meet them down the street. I love these books and I have already read a couple of the "Danger.com". Each story almost seemed to almost happen on the internet. The charters in this book made a mistake to tell online that he wanted illegal cigars. This is why it left me in suspense because I never knew what was going to happen to them.

Danger.NET
This was a sequal to Shadow man. This is a MUST have if you have read that one. It takes you on differnt twists and turns, but it always leads you back one way or another. If you like the internet, you'll love this!

Designer Doodles: 12 International Designs for You to Hand-Colour and Frame
Published in Paperback by Search Pr Ltd (April, 2000)
Author: Christine Dymond
Average review score:

Love it
It is reminiscent of the huge Doodle Art posters that I colored as a kid. I recently bought another one of those posters at a drug store, and loved it so much, that I looked for similar items here on amazon.com. If you love coloring in detailed patterns, and enjoy the almost meditative state it can put you in, then buy this book right away!

designer doodles-review
This is a great book to color that will hold your interests for a long time.Designs are very complex bordering the realms of geometric designs ,floral patterns , and stained glass window all rolled into one page of intricate detail, printed on a non-bleeding , high quallity paper.I started coloring this book with my girlfriend one day out of boredom and before I knew it , I was starting the next page and then the next... My only possible complaint (had I any to offer ) would be the fact of not being able to locate more publications by Christine Dymond . Definitely a good choice.

Difficult Freedom: Essays on Judaism
Published in Paperback by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (November, 1997)
Authors: Emmanuel Levinas, Sean Hand, and Emmanual Levinas
Average review score:

A collection highly memorable and engaging
Emmanuel Levinas takes Jewish thought to new levels, adding very new, yet very ancient ways of thinking into his works. He has several highly recognized works in the philosphy world- "Time and the Other", amd "Existence and Existents", but his works that build directly off of Jewish thought (such as this one) are my favorites. He manages to cut through the shell of everything and shed a beautiful yet heavy light on life.... I think it would be more fitting to put a Levinas quotes from Difficult Freedom in this review, and let you see for yourself.

"At the dawning of the new world, Judaism has the consciousness to possess, through its permanence, a function in the general economy of Being. No one can replace it. Someone has to exist in the world who is as old as the world. For Judaism, the great migrations of the people , the migrations among the people and the upheavals of history have never presented a deadly threat. It always found what remained to it. It has a painful experience of living on; its performance accustomed it to judging history and refusing to accept the verdict of a History that that proclaimed itself judge. Perhaps Jewish thought in general consists today in holding on more firmly than ever to this permanence and this eternity. Judaism has traversed history history without taking up history's causes. It has the power to judge, alone against all, the victory of visible and organized forces - if need be in order to reject them. Its head may be held high or its head may be down, but it is always stiff-necked. This temerity and this patience, which are as long as eternity itself, will perhaps be more necessary to humanity tomorrow or the day after tomorrow than they were yesterday or the day before." Difficult Freedom, p.166

difficult to read, perhaps, but will open up new worlds!
Several essays on Jewish issues and a brief and quirky, incomplete autobiography of Levinas, perhaps the finest thinker in post-modern Jewish philosophy. In this little volume are commentaries on Biblical and talmudic material, thoughts about current philosophical trends, what it means to be a Jew in the modern and post-holocaust world by a thoughtful survivor, and his unique wordplay. This book will shake your assumptions to their foundations. Never a casual read, but amazing to study.
